Project Overview
PCSD partnered with Education for Change (EFC) to renovate Lazear Charter Academy’s existing space on Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) land. A charter school with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), Lazear Charter Academy enrolls 480 students in grades TK-8.
The goal of the project was to modernize the old campus, which consisted largely of portable buildings and outdated classrooms. With consultation from PCSD, EFC was able to finance the Lazear Charter Academy project via state funding. Completed in 2021, the renovated facility includes 25 fully modernized classrooms, a Maker Space, an amphitheater, and a multi-purpose room with roll-up doors to create a flexible indoor/outdoor space. Additionally, a new playground, parking lot, and sports field were constructed on the southern half of the campus.
